The History of the Magazzini Generali in Milan

The venue opened in the early 1990s, precisely in 1995, on Via Pietrasanta, taking its name from its original function. The building was constructed as one of the many railway warehouses linked to the nearby Porta Romana railway yard, complete with direct connections to the tracks for loading and unloading goods. 

 
Thanks to the vision of Gian Carlo Soresina, the founder, and the artistic directors who succeeded him over the years, Magazzini Generali evolved into more than just a nightclub with recorded music. The concept was novel—and remains its identity today—focusing on live music with a stage for artists and DJs, alongside other musical events. 

Magazzini Generali: One of Milan’s Most Famous Nightclubs

The industrial architecture of the space and its location in a peripheral area of Milan perfectly aligned with the vision for Magazzini Generali, drawing inspiration from the famous clubs of the ’90s in Berlin, London, and other European capitals. The venue attracted an alternative crowd that was less interested in the classic nightclub concept. Over the years, its popularity grew, necessitating expansions in space and services. 

Adriana Onorato, Director of Magazzini Generali

Among those who once felt at home at Magazzini Generali is Adriana Onorato, who used to come here to dance and is now its General Manager. Since 2015, she has been responsible for preserving the venue’s legacy while also shaping its future to keep up with the times. 

In recent years, Magazzini Generali has broadened its offerings beyond musical concerts to include theatrical performances, fashion shows, burlesque events, and even corporate gatherings. 

Within the context of Scalo di Porta Romana, Magazzini Generali has been a historical presence for over thirty years, enriching the atmosphere of an area of Milan long before its redevelopment began.
